Choosing the best luxury dog bed is not that different from buying one for yourself. Yes, you want the bed to look nice, but it should also cater to your pet’s individual sleeping style and needs. Some dogs like to sleep curled up, while others like to sprawl. Older dogs have different needs than puppies. Some dogs want privacy, while others prefer open-air.

The first thing you’ll want to do is observe how your dog likes to sleep. What makes them the most comfortable?  Do they run hot? Do they switch sleep positions frequently? Like us, dogs have their own sleeping postures, and understanding these preferences is key to providing them with optimal comfort. Here are some sleeping styles to consider:

Curl or Stretch?

Does your pup resemble a cozy ball of fur, or a majestic sprawl master when they snooze? Some dogs are fond of curling up at night, seeking the same security and comfort of their wild ancestors. Others prefer to sprawl out luxuriously, claiming as much space as they can.

Cool or Hot Dog?

Some dogs run hotter than others. If your pup finds solace on the cool tiles during the summer, they might benefit from a specialized cooling bed. These beds are designed to regulate your dog’s body temperature, ensuring a refreshing and comfortable sleep on the hottest of days. Or is your four-legged friend more inclined to chase the sun, and snuggle under blankets?  If so, look for something furry and warm.

Burrower or Nervous?

Some breeds, like Dachshunds and Terriers, have a natural inclination to burrow and nestle. For these pups, a bed with a cozy nook or an added blanket can create a sense of security akin to a den. Dogs who exhibit nervousness might also prefer a tent or cave-like bed.

Old Bones?

Aging dogs and those with joint issues may require an orthopedic bed to support their older bodies. These beds are often made of memory foam and have pillow-like bolsters to cushion the head and provide stability.

Chewer?

Is your dog a champion chewer, transforming beds into chew toys with impressive speed? If so, invest in a durable and chew-resistant bed. There are specially designed to withstand the most determined of gnawers.

Now that you have a better understanding of how your dog sleeps, it’s time to pick a luxury bed to match.  We’ve scoured the web, browsed countless stores, and read dozens of authoritative review sites to select not only the best bed, but also the best-looking, best-made and best-designed bed in each category.

What to Look For

While functionality is crucial, the style and design of the dog bed should complement your home decor. Consider your personal preferences and choose a bed that suits your aesthetic taste. With so many options today, there is no need to sacrifice style for your dog’s sleep.

Select a dog bed that matches your dog’s size and provides enough space to stretch out comfortably. Ideally, the bed should be large enough to accommodate your dog in various sleeping positions.  To be safe, add a couple of inches to your dog’s measurement and opt for a slightly bigger bed.

Look for a dog bed that offers adequate support and cushioning. Memory foam or orthopedic beds are excellent choices, especially for older dogs, those with joint issues and bigger dogs. Smaller dogs might prefer fluffier fabrics and lighter polyester filling. Vets say that the bed should also provide proper spinal alignment and relieve pressure points for better sleep.

Dogs may scratch, chew, or dig at their beds, so choose a bed with sturdy construction and reinforced stitching. Additionally, consider materials that are hypoallergenic.

Dogs can be messy, so it’s essential to choose a bed that is easy to clean. Look for removable, machine-washable covers that can be easily taken off and washed. This ensures hygiene and eliminates any odors or allergens that may accumulate over time.

1. Best Luxury Dog Bed

Bluewater Dog Bouclé Dog Bed

One dog bed shows up on all the major review sites (including the Strategist, Wirecutter, Rover and Good Housekeeping):  the Casper dog bed.  Those sites point to its human-grade memory foam, the firm support and ease of washing. But we think it’s rather unattractive – it looks more like a bare mattress than a finished bed.

Luckily, there are similar memory-foam dog beds out there, covered in more luxurious and designer fabrics. Standouts include the Barney Bed, which offers a variety of covers including bouclé, oat linen and spun yarn, starting at $169. Our pick, however, is from Bluewater Dog, which makes a handsome bed covered in boucle.  It is shaped like the Casper bed, also made of certified-orthopedic memory foam, is machine washable, and looks great next to your designer reading chair.

Materials: Memory foam and boucle |  Size: Small (23” x 29”) to Extra large (44” x 61”) | Colors: Cloud, sand and ocean blue

Pros:
  • High-quality memory foam
  • Furniture-grade fabric
Cons:
  • Limited colors and fabrics

2. Best Luxury Dog Bed for Curlers

Bedsure Calming Dog Bed

If your dog likes to snuggle into a ball, look no further than a furry donut bed. Soft, fluffy and with a raised rim, it mimics a mother’s fur coat, and soothes your dog’s need for comfort and security. There are countless versions of this bed, and many review sites recommend the “original” by Best Friends by Sheri.  My dog has tried several, and prefers the one made by Bedsure, a company that makes bedding for both humans and pets. The Bedsure Calming Dog Bed improves upon the “original” design with a non-slip bottom and stiffer poly filling that provides more neck support.  It also is easy to clean in the washing machine, and it retains its fluffiness after line-drying.

Materials: Polyester | Size: Small (20” x 20” x 6”) to Human Size (72” x 48” x 14) Colors: 10 colors including camel, dark gray and pink

Pros:
  • Super Plush
  • Non-slip bottom
Cons:
  • Cover not removable

3. Best Luxury Dog Bed for Burrowers

Snoozer Cozy Cave Bed

Some dogs like to burrow inside a cave bed and sleep under a soft hooded blanket.   This is especially true of nervous dogs, small toy dogs, and thin-furred dogs that get chilly at night.

Most cave dog beds, however,  look like cheap bean bags.  One exception (found after hours of Googling) is the Opulence Burrow Bed made by a U.K. company called Miaboo. The Miaboo bed features nice tailoring, rich fabrics and a clean Scandinavian design.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t ship to the U.S.  One domestic option that caught our eye was the Snoozer Cozy Cave Bed, which comes in more than 25 fabrics and shapes, including a “luxury” suede. All the versions have machine washable covers, are lined in sherpa, and filled with plush poly.

Materials: Microsuede, sherpa and poly fill | Size: Small (25” diameter) to large dogs (45”) | Color: More than 25 colors and 4 shapes (round, square, rectangle and crate beds)

Pros:
  • A dog sanctuary
  • Lots of color options
Cons:
  • Not waterproof

4. Best Dog Bed for Sprawlers

Doca Pet Hygge Bed

Just because your dog likes to stretch out like a furry blob, doesn’t mean the dog bed has to look lumpy, too. Doca Pet, a design brand based in Chicago, makes a modern and minimal  Hygge Bed that looks crisp and uncluttered. The Hygge Bed is made from rugged Knoll fabrics that can be unzippered and washed, and provides ample room for dogs that prefer to sprawl their legs in all directions while they snooze.

Materials: PolyesterSize: Medium (33” x 27”) and large (41” x 30”) | Color: Shadow

Pros:
  • Minimalist design
  • Rich fabric
Cons:
  • Limited colors

5. Best Orthopedic Bed for Dogs

Coop Sanctuary Pet Bed

Orthopedic beds are great for dogs of all ages, but they are especially beneficial for older dogs, dogs with joint pain or arthritis, and dogs that are recovering from surgery. Look for a bed with human-grade memory foam, to provide support and cushioning that help to reduce pain and improve sleep.

The Sanctuary Pet Bed by Coop not only looks great, but the top pillow is filled with proprietary cubes of foam that can be added or subtracted to adjust to your dog’s individual size and weight.  The bed is covered in an upholstery-grade chenille that can be unzipped and machine washed, and features a waterproof top layer and skid-proof base.

Materials: Chenille, memory foam, polyester | Size: Medium (22” x 32”), Large (27” by 36”) and Jumbo (35” by 44”) | Colors: Oat gray

Pros:
  • Clean design
  • Adjustable firmness
Cons:
  • Limited colors and sizes

6. Best Dog Bed for Chewers

Orvis ToughChew Platform Bed

If your dog loves to chew, you know how difficult it can be to find a bed that won’t get destroyed.  Pick a bed made from durable materials, such as heavy-duty canvas or leather, that can withstand your dog’s chewing.

Orvis makes a ToughChew ComfortFill-Eco Platform Bed that uses a ripstop nylon bonded to a microvelvet layer, so it is both chew resistant and soft.   A ballistic-grade nylon layer offers additional protection, a solid brass zipper offers durability, and there are no cords or tags to tempt your dog.  Orvis is so certain that this bed is chew-proof, that it will refund your purchase if your dog manages to chew through it.

Materials: Ripstop nylon and microvelvet, recycled polyester fill | SizeSmall (up to 40 pounds) to extra large (more than 90 pounds) | Colors: Slate, gray tweed and charcoal chev

Pros:
  • Chew-proof guarantee
  • Filled with recycled polyester
Cons:
  • Could use more filling

7. Best Cooling Bed for Hot Dogs

If your furry friend runs hot, a cooling bed is crucial to your dog’s sleep. Traditional dog beds can trap heat, making your dog even hotter. An elevated cot bed is a great option because it allows air to circulate around them, keeping them cool and comfortable.  Most elevated dog beds, however, look like the lightweight cots found at summer camp.

One colorful exception comes from Vetreska, a NYC-based pet collective, which makes a Mondrian-esque cot that is carried by the MoMA Design Store. The Vetreska Chroma Elevated Pet Bed features a yellow picnic cloth-like surface and painted wooden rods.  Sadly, it only comes in one size.  If you need more options, an Arkansas company called 4Legs4Pets makes a well-designed, modular cot system that can be customized in countless ways, including 7 sizes, 27 fabrics colors, 33 leg colors and 23 metal rod colors.

Materials: Beachwood stand and polyester Oxford cloth | Sizes: 22” x 28” | Colors: One option

Pros:
  • Design cred
  • Stylish and functional
Cons:
  • One size only
